Huge .ithmb files and "Other" space...help?

Hi all....been googling on this topic and haven't found much. I noticed when I recently synced to ITunes that my Other space was at 4.1GB. I have a 32gb Ipad3. I thought that was extremely large as many articles on the Internet said it should be at a gig or less. So I did a full restore and the "Other" stayed the same. I downloaded Disk Aid to see if I could tell what was going on. When I navigate to the PhotoData/Thumbnails folder, I have files like 158x158.ithmb, 240x240.ithmb, etc. that total to over 3GB???


So I have 20GB+ of actual photos on my PC, when I sync to iTunes it resizes to about 10GB in "Photos" area, and the "Other" shows 4.1GB, of which 3GB are these .ithmb files. I know this because if I delete those .ithmb files and turn off Photos, my Other drops down to less than 1GB.

I have done a restore from backup and it doesn't change. It's definitely these .ithmb files. I tried everything...deleting photo cache, creating as new Ipad and resyncing Photos, backups, etc. Nothing impacts the "Other' unless I stop syncing Photos...which takes these .ithmb files back down to normal.

Anyone have experience with this??? It's driving me crazy! Any insight is appreciated...I am almost at the point where I am going to try to use a 3rd party photo app to see if I can get rid of these thumbnail files.

Do you have photos assigned to contacts? Other can be lots of different things that are stored...have a look at this link.

Those .ithmb files are used by various parts of iOS where thumbnails of your photos are displayed such as the photos app itself, and in places where you can select photos from your library.

Unless you stop syncing photos completely you can't get rid of them as they will be regenerated as long as the photos are on the device. The only way to reduce the amount of space they take up without turning off syncing completely is to reduce the number of photos being synced.
