No, unfortunately you cannot. Imessaging is only performed between apple mobile device running iOS 5 or greater.

Is there a contact list for IOS 5, Imessage, users? I now use my general email contact list and send an imessage to my wife using her applieId email address at Comcast. This works. I guess I have to email the person I wish to IMESSAGE and ask if they have IOS5? A little awkward, but doable. I would think Apple has a plan, otherwise why insist on a email address as an AppleID?
You can use an email or even their phone number (again, must be an iPhone) to send imessaging. I am not aware of a registry or contact list of all iOS 5 users. All I have done is just asked the person, which is the easiest for me...however, most are not aware what they are running, so than you have to explain how to get to their settings, etc.
