It's just as safe as any computer in that you need to follow the same protocols - make sure you are on a secure site (address starts with https://) and that you have a good password. Its not the computer you use when you go online, it's the careful and secure process you use when venturing out on the "Wild Wild Web."
The extra good news is that the iPad, so far, is not vulnerable to viruses.
So, bank away!
