part from the fact it'll probably take another 15 years or so until we in the UK get 4g rolled out nation wide

Indeed but as I understand things most MNO's have made space available for the equipment so it really relies on ofcom completing the spectrum sale.
There is a trial network from O2 in London, and some other trials in the uk, Germany is quite advanced as is Sweden.
