Data Cable not charging!!

I have bought a data cable, not apple branded and its showing that its charging when i plug in to the mains, but it does not. I have tried my spare apple cable and that works so it is not the plug its the cable. Is apple blocking cheap cables or something??

Apple likely has nothing to do w/ the manufacture or specifications of a third party charging cord - but 'whoever' makes the cord certainly does. These generic Apple products are typically less expensive but can be a 'hit & miss' - when I need replacements or accessories for my Apple devices, I purchase Apple's certified products. Your 3rd party cord is likely defective or has stopped working - e.g. take a look at the 'negative' Amazon reviews HERE - this topic has come up often in the forum and the consensus opinion usually is to stick w/ the Apple brand, but just my opinion; third party products, esp. from reliable OEMs, will often work fine.
