I have an ipad3. I bought the apple hdmi out video cable. It mirrors what's on the ipad except when watching Amazon Instant video app. It works great on the ipad but the video blacks out after a few seconds on the TV. Not sure how to explain any better than that. Amazon said their app isn't set up for apple, but why if it plays on tab starts on TV then drops just video?
I have the Apple Digital AV adaptor (30-pin model) that I have been using successfully to display HD video from my iPad 2 to a flat screen tv for a year or more. I recently picked up a second iPad (this one the iPad4). I tried using this adaptor with the 30-pin to Lightning adapter on the iPad 4 and it says "unsupported accessory". It still works fine on the iPad 2. Both are running IOS 6.01. Has anyone else had this experience? Do I just need to buy the Lightning model Digital AV adaptor?
Thanks,
Jeff
I just found the answer to my question. Apparently the 30-pin adapters will not work on iPad 4 or iPhone 5 even with the 30-pin to lightning connector. I found this page on the apple site that says: "Apple AV adapters cannot provide video output when used with Lightning to 30-pin Adapter or Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2 m) adapter."

You're going to have to use an Apple TV if you want to show the videos on your iPad 4 on your TV.Originally Posted by jwjohnson

Apple does sell a Lightning connector Digital AV adapter. Are you saying that won't work with the iPad 4? Seems weird if that were the case since the iPad 4 and the iPhone 5 are the only devices that you could even connect it to.
If you are saying the ATV would be a better solution, I would agree with you for home use. I have one there and it works great. In fact there is little reason to use the iPad at home with it at all since all my movies are in my iTunes library and I can just watch them on the ATV from my home computer.
I use the iPad/Digital AV adapter when travelling. It's nice to watch something other than the dreck on TV when staying at a hotel, etc.
Ok folks, I just want to confirm that today I received the "older" genuine apple av adapter from amazon. It to does not work on my iPad 2. I get the same message "this accessory requires an iOS update"
I just don't understand it. The iPad 2 is simply supposed to mirror right onto my HDTV.
Should I maybe order some of the older composit cables ? I'm talking about the cable that has the red, yellow and white cables ?
I'm not sure what you mean by "older" other than the fact it's the 30 pin connector and not the new lightning connector? The most recent 30 pin genuine Apple AV connector should work with the iPad 2 & 3 and mirror on iOS 5 or 6. Apple Stores and other places still sell these off the shelf.Originally Posted by iloco
The VGA adaptor also mirrors, but I'm not sure the composite or component adapters do.

Yes, I have windows PCs as well! (too many to list)
But that's just it.......they don't. Apple changes the adapter once the iPad 3 was released. I tried both and as you can see from the photo......they don't work. This was a genuine apple av adapter for hdmi.
It would work to show whatever videos you have on your iPad 4 or iPhone 5 on your TV screen. The Apple TV does this and much more besides. If you can afford the extra $60.00, you might want to consider the Apple TV.Originally Posted by jwjohnson
