Updating iOS - issues, error msg

We have repeatedly tried to update from iOS 4 to iOS 5, but we always get an error message to "check our network settings, and make sure our network is connected". Well, the settings are fine, and we ARE in fact connected. It will complete the sync, but it will not complete the update. Any suggestions?

Are you trying an OTA update? If so, it won't work. OTA updates only became available to devices on iOS 5 and above. Also, Apple stopped signing ios5.1.1 on the 21st of September.

No, I'm trying to do it on my desktop computer. We use wifi, we don't go OTA.

    Updating iOS

I am going to assume you are dealing with a first generation iPad, as those are the only ones that can have iOS 5.1.1 installed on it...

Have a look at this link: TUTORIAL - Failsafe method to restore the current version of IOS

It's designed and written so that, if the steps are followed as written, you should end up with the most current firmware version on your iPad.

If you have never jail broke your iPad (or downloaded/used a program called Tiny Umbrella) - you can safely skip the step outlined in step 2.

I recommend this process because it is sometimes easier to go around iTunes' download of the firmware version. It's a big file and sometimes, it doesn't work well (as you've discovered).

Hopefully, this'll help. Keep us posted?

You can't upgrade an iPad 2 from iOS 4 to iOS 5 at this time because iOS 5.1.1, the latest iOS 5 version, is no longer signed by Apple. You can only update to iOS 6.

Well then that. Either way, it won't update anything because it says there's something wrong with our network connection when we hook it up to the desktop. We've tried without the firewall to no avail. We don't have the opportunity to update it to anything at this point.

    Updating iOS

Can you make a backup of the iPad2? If you can, may I suggest you do so, then take the iPad to the Apple store (make an appointment with the Genius Bar) to have them do the upgrade for you.

As you can see, it's very hard to help with computer issues over the 'Net with written words. There are so many variables...

But - the people at the Apple store should be able to help (and the backup will be there in case they have to wipe the iPad when upgrading it).

Sorry to not be of better help.
