Tried everything and I still get push notifications from certain apps, aside from turning this off from the settings notifications or setting app side bar is there anything else I can do before trashing the app?

Have a look at the app themselves, some of them have their own settings for notifications, also try a reset of your iPad and this may solve it.

Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start. Hope it helps for you.

You can adjust the notification preferences of your apps by going to Settings>Notifications and following the directions in these screenshots.

I have found in the past when trying to turn off push notifications for a particular app it did take some time to stop. My theory, is that it needs time to filter out to the Apple server to record the change. After all, they are "pushing" the notification to you. I guess connectivity to the Internet is a big factor in this.

There must be some way of "forcing" the update to head straight out to the server. Maybe a sync or back up expedites things?

That's a good theory. I swear I've had a few that kept notifying me of stuff after shutting it off. Make sure each setting is truly off too, I've accidentally left an option ON before.
