You can't purchase ebooks directly from the Kobo app,you have to go to the Kobo instant reader or the Kobo website to order your ebooks and other content.

I believe it's because Kobo doesn't want to pay the 30% commission to Apple if the books were sold directly through the app.
The Kindle app is the same way.

Apple changed the requirements for purchasing books through the reader apps last June. Actually, they enforced their rule about an in-app purchase in that the vendor must provide Apple 30% of the sales price or not be allowed to sell within the app.

Most [all?] of the major vendors did not like this idea, so the ability to purchase books within the apps was removed. Now - you've got to use the web browser to buy the books and then download them within the app.

What I've done is add a home screen bookmark for the Kobo instant reader and placed it right beside the Kobo app to make it as convenient as possible to purchase ebooks and other content.

It's not that Apple removed the in app purchase feature,Kobo did that itself to avoid paying 30% of their sales income from users of the Kobo app to Apple.
