About LinkBacksI have 8 updates and have tapped to "update all" and it appears it goes into updating mode, however it still shows 8 items to be updated - do I have to uninstall all the apps that need to be updated?

No, you do not. You may be experiencing some communication issues due to a slow Internet connection, possibly. You could also try turning the iPad off completely then restarting just to kick it along some. With a good wifi connection you should get better results when updating apps.
