How do I transfer podcasts?

I have some podcasts on my iPhone 4 that I would like to transfer to my iPad 2. I know it can be done using iTunes but I can't see how. I find iTunes very difficult and have had some bad experiences with it so I'd appreciate some detailed suggestions. Thanks in advance...

I don't know of any way to do it except through iTunes.

If you set up podcast syncing in iTunes for the iPhone, then podcasts you downloaded on the iPhone will be copied to iTunes. If they are not, you can use the Transfer Purchases option (right click on the iPhone under the Devices list in the right column).

Set up podcast syncing for the iPad as well. Then select the podcasts you want copied to the iPad to sync.

If you need more detail than that, let me know.

Since podcast are free I handle then in two way. Short ones (most audio) I download directly to the device, even if I have to do it twice. Long podcasts, like videos, I download using iTunes on the computer, then sync to the devices I want.

I've never had a reason to go from device to device, though I did do a quick test to make sure it worked before making this post.

Thank you. I wasn't hoping to find an alternative to iTunes, just instructions so that I can avoid the trouble, some of it quite disastrous, with iTunes that I had before. Once bitten. twice shy, as they say. One problem is that the iPhone and iPad are my first Apple products, and iTunes just feels so unlike other software I use regularly. Intuitive it is not.

I already have all the podcasts in iTunes, there is even some duplication I see. The reason I don't want to download them again is that I can't. There are never more than ten of them up at a time. They delete the oldest when a new one is added, and they do that about once a month. I have four years of them (49 tracks).

So how do I control the DIRECTION of the sync? It always seems to want to go from device to iTunes, not the other way around, which is what I want there...

As long as you have not selected any podcasts to sync to the iPad/iPhone, they will not sync from iTunes to the device. Syncing back to iTunes appears to be automatic. I did nothing to make this happen.

The podcast I synced back to iTunes for the iPhone did not automatically set itself up to sync to the iPad. I had to select it in the settings to make it happen. There are a multitude of options for syncing podcasts to the devices. Everything from automatically syncing some number of newest, oldest, unwatched, to manually selecting the individual tracks. You'll just have to choose what you like.

I recommend try syncing a small number a few different ways to seeing how it works, then pick what you like best and run with it.

If you run into any notices about removing content you'd just as soon keep, back off and let me know. We'll get that straightened out.

Thanks, but I have never found any such choices/settings for podcast syncs, where are they? I HAVE looked. And I assume I should make them only when the iPad is connected and restore the previous setting as soon as the transfer has been made.

I have become very wary of sync using iTunes because I first set it up for my iPhone 3G, upgraded to an iPhone 4, then my wife got one, and most recently I got an iPad 2. My first disaster was with the 3G, when an upgrade failed and I lost a month of data entered since the last backup. Most recently I found that sync was trying to download ALL the content of my iPhone 4 to my wife's... Including apps that I had purchased and should not have been usable on hers--unless, of course, apps are like music tracks and are usuable by members of the family. But surely that isn't so?

I have UNchecked sync, including of course "sync immediately upon connection to iTunes" and now try to select just what I want synced. Not simple.

As long as your devices are all set up with the same iTunes account you can share apps. Not only does it work, but Apple's EULA specifically allows for sharing this way with family.

When you have multiple devices with different iTunes accounts you are better off syncing them to seperate iTunes libraries. You can do that by setting up other users on the computer, and use those logons when syncing.

If you are tring to mix and match, share music, not share apps, etc. Things get complicated.

Wish I had known that before my wife got her iPhone. Now she has acquired her own Apple ID, does this mean she cannot sign on with MY ID and password on her phone? I have been collecting apps for a couple of years and have most of what she wants already.

She doesn't share my interests in music at all, so I guess we are in that "complicated" situation you mentioned, where the accounts and syncs are different but some of them overlap.

Would be grateful to have the app usability issue cleared up and for any any advice you can give on keeping things straight in iTunes. For instance I am not sure what you mean about setting up other users on the computer (a notebook PC running Windows XP).

She can sign on to your account with the iPhone (individually in the App Store, iBooks, and iTunes), and the apps will work fine. If she has apps from both accounts she will need to sign into the account it was purchased with to update it. You can do the same with your iPad if shee has an app tou want. You'll also have to do this in iTunes on the computer if you update from there. This is part of what I meant by complicated.

Extra info. Most iPhone apps will run on the iPad, though the will be emulated (small in middle of screen, or pixle doubled). Some apps are universal and run well on both devices. These have a plus mark next to the price in the App Store.

If you have not bought any media on her account ( music, books, TV shows) I would keep it that way. If you have not bought any apps, even better. Just because you have the Apple ID doesn't mean you have to use it with the phone. It is not linked to the hardware.
