Why I kept closing apps manually is because it seems like the ipad is slowing down a bit whenever much is visible in the multitask bar. I could be mistaken of course, however it does seem like it. When the apps are "closed" then the system becomes a bit snappier.

For sure - if you've unloaded an app and freed up some RAM then, when you start another app off either (a) it's still in RAM because you unloaded other apps that were in RAM and so iOS could leave this particular app in RAM, so it starts faster because it doesn't need to be reloaded or (b) you've freed up RAM by unloading apps so, when you come to load another app, iOS doesn't need to unload an app that's already in RAM as you've already done this for iOS.

So your observations make perfect sense!!

Ah that does indeed make perfect sense! The logic behind it is definately there. I therefore assume apps that are still in RAM won't use any battery either, correct? Thanks again for all your help.

Generally speaking, you're right, though iOS does allow an app to keep some functionality active when it's suspended - I mentioned audio before, for example. So there is at least the opportunity for a suspended app to use some battery.

If you're interested in looking at multi-tasking in some more detail, there's an interesting presentation here....

Tim...thanks! I will check out the document as well...

Edit : have read the document, but although I understand some parts, most of it is too technical for me personally. I understood your info much better

Apple should have included a icon you click that closes all open apps or made the operating system clear all apps before it shuts down as most OP's do.

This is my biggest complaint that I have with the iPad. Its extremely annoying how much hassle it is to close down programs.
