    Always a practical approach.

A magnet alone isn't particularly useful though. The magnetic sensor is about 7cm from the edge, but there is a stronger magnet, 9.5cm below the top edge, so if you where to place a magnet at the magnetic sensor, it will likely slide down to the stronger magnet and turn the iPad on.

But yes, it is a possibility, but only useful if one insists to wake the device up with a magnet.

Yes - now this needs some thinking about. I wonder if we could come up with a typically British 'Heath Robinson' construction?

it's a shame that magnetic activated on/off feature couldn't also have been an invisible finger swipe option for those who dont have a smart cover or magnets hanging about in their pockets.

    it's funny it's only a smart-case owner's option.

There are, of course, other third-party cases out there that use the magnetic on/off feature. Some Forum members have even made their own (knitted in one case, quilted in another - do I even know what the difference is???

I use smart cover most nights to put it in sleep mode, I always close apps down at end of each use and try and to run battery completely flat then do full charge to condition battery.

    Just throw in my 2c....

At the start of the year, I had my iPad1 on for 9 weeks without switching off... No performance issues.

And, although we don't have a jailbreak for the iPad2 yet, when it arrives there us a lovelly little tweak called NoLockScreen wnich gives you that "instant on" smartcover feel without the cover or magnets. I've had this on my iPad1 for ages... Works great with my Moleskine case.

How do make nolockscreen turn on when you open your case, I can't figure it out?
Thank you for all your help.

No, it doesn't do that, sorry if I misled. I still need to hit the power button. It just skips the slide to unlock for you.
But I do also use screendimmer to blank the screen rather than auto lock, so a finger on the screen wakes it up if not in sleep mode...
Best combo I can come up with until I get my iPad2 and smartcover!

Is your iPad pass coded? If so I think that overrides for rather obvious reasons. If not try looking in settings > general > iPad cover lock/unlock.

It should be on by default but it may have been turned off. It it's on I'm not sure what's going on. Im guessing you have done a full shut down for a full 10 to 20 seconds?
