    What format was it?

When you downloaded the attachment it didn't it ask what application to open it with? I don't remember it ever allowing it to let me 'save' an attachment with specifying the "owning" application.

As for the file; MOBI is normally used with the Kindle application. Nook and iBooks both use ePub. I beleive both can do PDF files as well.

Open iBooks. In the upper left corner you will see ”store" and "collections". Inside collections you will see Books, Purchased Books and PDF’s. Might it be in one of those folders?

Like Frank77 said. iBooks is not a native app, although it's free and, IMO, absolutely essential. If you don't have it, you should download it. If your book is in .epub or .pdf format, iBooks will open it.

Yes... So sorry. I was thinking iBooks was a native app.

No worries. You gave great info, and iBooks is so essential, its easy to forget that we downloaded it. In my case, I think it was my first download.

In iOS apps like the email app, safari, or other apps like the chrome browser when you click a link for a PDF it just opens in that app, but it doesn't automatically save it. If you just do one tap in the middle of the screen after it has downloaded two buttons will pop up on the upper corner of the screen, one will be "open in" and the other will be "open in XYZ", with XYZ being the app that you have used most to open said file type in the past. When you click "open in" it will bring up a list of all the apps loaded on your phone capable of opening that files file type.
