You can delete purchased books from your iPad; you just can't delete them from Apple's records.
What you can do, however, is remove the option to show all purchased books in iBooks. To do so, navigate to the iBooks tab in your Settings app. Then, on the right side, you'll see a line titled "Show All Purchases." Make sure it's turned OFF and then the list of your purchased books will be gone when viewing in your iBooks app.
Hope this helps.

Books listed in the iTunes Store take no space. Not on your iPad, and not in iCloud.
So, once you delete the book from iBooks bookshelvs on the iPad (not the Purchased Books Shelf which can be turned off in Settings > iBooks), but the other shelves, then it is no longer taking space on your iPad. It never took up any space in iCloud.
Appreciate your help twerppoet. Regards.
No problem. It's a common misconception.
