Symbol keys stopped working

Hi, My mom's iPad's symbol keys have stopped working on her ipad1. Any suggestions to get them going again?

Lets try something easy to begin with. Hold the standby/sleep button on the top and the home button at the bottom at the same time until a white Apple logo appears. Then release the buttons. This will do a total reboot of the iPad and will likely fix the issue.
