Cant upgrade to 5.0.1 for my ipad 1

Someone please help! Ok so I want to upgrade to new version and once I start syncing to iTunes it goes to backing up and then sends error and if continuing will lose all files in iPad....?????!!! It's really weird.

What version are you on now?
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes first, and then do a full backup. Here are 2 threads that will help you.
