It's to send iMessages (basically, texts) back and forth, via WiFi, with others who have iDevices with iOS 5 installed. Free!
It's a very cool upgrade. Another moderator and I have used this iMessage to send free texts - he lives in Scotland, I live in the USA. We can talk across the miles with no charge to either of us. That's so kewl!
I am impressed with Apple on this one...

It's like MSN Messenger or BB Messenger except its for Apple OS5 users. As I don't know anybody else with OS it's no use to me.
