hi folks, im from the uk and im off to new york tomorrow, im wanting to buy a wi-fi 3g ipad whilst there but need to know if it will be ok to do so..also is there anything to pay for bringing one into uk like duty etc?

Absolutely there is something to pay...

(a) Import Duty
(b) VAT at 20%

So you'll need to take that into consideration when assessing the prices in the US. Other than that, there's no problem in getting an iPad bought in the US (AT&T model only, the Verizon version won't work in the UK) to work in the UK.
