Someone told me that if you open a USA iTunes account you can get different apps loaded onto your iPad that are not available in the UK.

Three questions spring to mind
Is it possible?
is it legal?
and if the above answers are yes!
how do you do it?

Yes - it's possible and Apple even tell you how to do it...

Create an iTunes App Store account without a credit card

You need to obtain a US Apple iTunes gift card, but that's not a problem as you can find many companies that sell them to you on the Internet (for a small premium). Most accept credit cards or PayPal and will immediately email you the card code so that you can enter it immediately into your iTunes account - i.e. there's no need to be in possession of the physical card, you simply need the code off the back of the card.

Thanks - I forgot about that. Two of my kids work in the US and one is studying in Canada, so typing in their addresses comes as second nature!!
