To set your mind at rest - no, you don't need to buy a new printer.

Are you running the latest version of the iPAD operating system, iOS 10.2?

This version supports in-app printing for apps that take advantage of the facility (not all currently do, but will probably include that as they upgrade).

The in-app printing on the iPad only supports printers that have AirPrint capability - of which there are virtually none at the moment and, currently, all are HP printers. That's the bad news!

The good news is that there are several third party apps out there that will enable you to print. I use PrintCentral which will wirelessly print directly to almost any WiFi enabled printer and to *all* printers (without exception) via a wireless connection to a PC. The advantage of PrintCentral is that it cleverly inserts itself into the 'Print' menu of apps that support in-app printing, making itself 'appear' like an AirPrint compatible printer (i.e. the iPad 'finds' it and thinks it's an AirPrint printer). PrintCentral then converts the iPad's AirPrint printing protocol into a format that your non-AirPrint printer can understand.

My printer - a color laser printer by Samsung - was not directly supported by PrintCentral, but it works just fine using their free 'WePrint' app for my PC.

PrintCentral also enables direct PC<->iPad file transfer without iTunes.
