More iPad 2 rumours have surfaced from DigiTimes today, with AppleInsider reporting that DigiTimes has tapped into market rumours floating around Taiwan that a Taiwanese company called Largan Precision has been chosen by Apple as the sole supplier of lens modules for the next version of the iPad, which DigiTimes is predicting will start shipping as early as the first quarter of 2011. Largan has neither confirmed nor denied the stories, unsurprisingly. Apple never reveals official details about individual iPad and iPhone component makers, but Largan has been previously mentioned as a possible manufacturer of 5-megapixel lenses for the iPhone 4.
As AppleInsider reports, there have long been rumours about the next iPad having at least one, possibly two, cameras, but this is the first time that an actual company has been named as a supplier. Following the news, Largan’s share price rose by 5.6% on the Taiwan Stock Market.

Paid Content reports today that the International Herald Tribune has just released an iPad app, which for now will be free, due to its sponsorship by Cartier. Unfortunately though, the app will only be free until the beginning of 2011, which is exactly the same scenario as the IHT’s parent company, The New York Times, which bought out the Paris-based paper back in 2002. Although the International Herald Tribune is, according to Paid Content, essentially now the international edition of the New York Times, and is powered by Press Engine, the New York Times Company’s mobile content software, it does still come with its own masthead, and is still very popular in its own right in Europe, especially with travellers and tourists, so an iPad app seems like an excellent idea. The app, like the paper itself, will feature world news, comprehensive business news, sports news, and columnists such as Roger Cohen and Paul Krugman. There’s also a Day in Pictures slideshow featuring photography from around the world.

At first I thought that “Project” was just a working title for Virgin and Richard Branson’s new iPad-only magazine, but Paid Content reports today that “Project” is actually the correct title of the magazine, which will be launched by Richard Branson in New York tomorrow. Paid Content has also got its hands on the animated video cover for Project, which really is very impressive.
Project will be helmed by Anthony Noguera, former editor-in-chief of lads mag FHM UK, and also editorial director of Emap/Bauer’s mens division, which might indicate that the magazine is going to be aimed more at a male readership, but then again it might not, we’ll have to wait and see!
“We can’t think of any other mags whose front cover is a video,” the publishers told Paid Content. “Project is what we like to think of as a ‘living magazine’ – evolving and updating throughout the month and taking advantage of the iPad’s capabilities to deliver a really innovative reader experience.”
If you want to get an early idea of what Project is all about before it launches tomorrow, there’s a blog already set up here:

2011 is getting closer and closer and for the first in the iDevice line-up to refresh we have, the iPad. The iPad 2 is set to launch early 2011 with tons of rumored features along with some we don't even know of. Apple could have something like... a robotic are come out from the headphone jack and serve your coffee ("here is some cab fare"). Well, the rumors are becoming more and more believable as the date gets closer.
This time we have a mystical USB port to be included in the 2nd Gen. This is now a standard in Europe and since Apple has cellular devices there... they are going to have to move a few things around, meaning micro or mini USB might be on the next model. This would of course replace the dock connector, or possibly just be a second port on the iPad. We also have a retina display most likely meeting up with the line-up, sweet! Facetime camera(s) and included Gyroscope are a bit of a no brianer. Finally we might see a more slim/ more mobile change to the body(could it really get smaller?).

Ever use your iDevice as an alarm clock? Ever have it mounted in your car and like to look at the time? Well now you can have your lockscreen be on until you hit the sleep button. Normally the lockscreen turns off or dims within a few seconds, but now you have the control. You can set the time you want it to dim, or not at all. Really useful if you have a dock or speaker dock for your device. Check out Lockscreen Dim Delay in Cydia for all devices.

9to5 Mac reports that iBooks is about to get a big makeover in a forthcoming update, with a new “Collections” function as well as improved organisation, and printing and emailing of PDFs. They even managed to obtain screenshots of the new Collections section. With the update, users will be able to create their own Collections and organise their books into folders that will be similar to the iOS 4 homescreen folders. Two default Collections will come as standard with the update – Books and PDFs.
As far as the new PDF features are concerned, you will now be able to email PDFs that you have stored in iBooks, as well as print the PDFs via AirPrint.
No official announcement has been made yet about exactly when we’ll be getting the update, but it should be soon, so maybe get a head start and get cracking planning what sort of Collections you’ll be creating!

Time management games always seem to work really well on the iPad’s bigger screen, so it’s great to see #1-selling iPhone time-management game Sally’s Spa getting an HD iPad version. This new version has been developed specifically for the iPad, with new artwork and features that enable Multi-Touch actions and multiple players.
In the game, Sally is on a mission to provide relaxation and rejuvenation to customers in exotic locations around the globe as she builds her spa business. Players get to perform a wide range of spa services, including facials, manicures, bath bombs, hot stone massages and more, as well as managing their virtual spas and trying to keep the fun and interesting characters happy. As the spa business grows, players earn money enabling them to shop for over 65 upgrade items including extra employees to keep customers soothed and relaxed.
Some of the new features in the game include a two-player mode where players can split the screen and collaborate to serve spa customers, and beautiful new high definition backgrounds and animations that bring the spa environments to life. Rumours about the possibility of Apple announcing a new iPad model in January remain strong, and now MacRumors is reporting on a story in Digitimes that states that, according to industry sources, the new iPad will have five new features, namely it will have FaceTime video calling, be thinner and smaller in size, have a USB port, Retina Display technology that will enhance image and colour output and a 3-axis gyroscope.
It’s difficult to know quite what to believe about this. The gyroscopes, FaceTime and Retina Display screen all sound very likely and very plausible when the second-gen iPad does eventually surface, although I’m still not sure iPad owners want two cameras or even one on the device. Thinner and lighter I can also believe, but as for smaller? Not so sure. Steve Jobs himself has only recently shot down in flames the idea of a 7-inch iPad, so it’s hard to believe that the new one will be smaller than the current version. And as far as the USB port is concerned, as MacRumors says, Apple has always used the dock connector for charging and syncing iOS devices, which has the benefit of giving them some degree of control over accessories, much more so than a generic USB port would. Although MacRumors then argues against itself by saying that it’s possible Apple has been forced to adopt the USB port because of new regulations passed in Europe imposing a universal USB charging standard amongst mobile phone manufacturers, including Apple.
As ever, watch this space!
