I had thought that you could not have an e reader that does text to speech but my son just got a Kindle and it has text to speech. Is there an app that will do that on the the iPad???
You can get the iPad to speak items on the screen.

The Amazon Kindle supports Text-to-Speech. However, the publishers can choose, whether they want to allow this feature. So text-to-speech will work on some books, but not on others. This is of course for the kindle device, as the iPad Kindle app does not have this feature.
