If you want to advance levels, fulfill board requests. The money won't be as good as selling on your stall, but the blue-star achievement bonuses are what you're collecting.
You can alternate between these two strategy
And yes, more GC friends means more neighbors, means more chance that people will visit your stall ;-)

I'll give it to them. They're putting forth a lot of effort to coerce farmers to spend money on diamonds.
