In the Message screen, it's the bottom-left quarter. Gifts are on the bottom-right, challenges on top-right, and neighbor invites top-left.

I'm having the same difficulties. I'm on the game a few times a day and am finding that my material request go unanswered 99% of the time. Not impressed also the return gift button doesn't always show. Getting very frustrated playing the game as I am not progressing as I should. I get lots of request which I respond to but get nothing in return. Today I lost over 5000 reputation points which are hard to come by to begin with.

Not really impressed with the additional silver it is taking to upgrade buildings. My time crystal buildings don't even have the ability to show the entire price of the upgrade. This just increases the times you have to play the scenarios and since you can only do that basically 3 in a row, the amount of DAYS it takes to get to the next level and complete quests. Not a fan, and on the verge of wasting my time with some other activity.
