Welcome to this forum u will love it!!!
Iron gives u a lot of DC
Building an army with panlong or paper is a good idea too

But the easiest is to just follow the goals listed in ur game bc they take u to where u need to be plus keep coming to this thread to watch out for updates in new n limited dragons n the gem dragon.... Which means the dragon of the month u have only that month to get it n it only has one combo
This months gem is Topaz it's breeding combo is firefly n cactus 30 hrs breeding

I haven't unlocked any of those yet! (Except of course I've unlocked quests!)

I got my topaz in the cave after my 5th try. I was using both the cave and island at the same time so it was really on my 10th try total. I know sandbox is saying to use the island but the cave worked for me
