With less than a week to go before Apple unleashes its new mini tablet upon the world, analysts have been making predictions about what the release might mean to other companies, but also to Apple itself and its larger iPad.
With the holiday season coming up next, it seems that there are some gloomy times up ahead for the big brother of the shrunken tablet. Assuming the iPad mini is going to start shipping to customers on the 2nd of November, analysts are expecting Apple to score between five and six million during the holiday quarter. It’s only natural that people are going to be drawn to the device by its very friendly price and acquire it as a gift to others and themselves.
Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray foresees that most likely, Apple is going to sell over 25 million iPads in the last quarter of the year. Chopping up the numbers for each device – 5 million is going to be the iPad mini and 20 million will be its larger brother.
“We believe that the smaller iPad could cannibalize one million regular iPad units in December or a rate of cannibalization at 20 percent. So, for every five million smaller iPads, you lose one million standard iPads,” explained Munster.
Not all analysts agree, however, Janney Montgomery Scott of Bill Choi for example, sees the iPad mini only stepping over regular iPad sales and snatching up 15% for itself. This isn’t much according to some, but Montgomery isn’t convinced by the new tablet so far. All in all, he predicts 25.5 million iPads to be sold by Cupertino in the holiday quarter:
