    CBS testing HTML5 Video Playback

Macrumors reports that CBS.com is testing HTML5 Video support that would be fully compatible with the iPad and replace the need for Flash video support. This might be a huge victory for Apple and could lead the way for other large media companies to make the switch as well. Youtube.com is another site that is currently testing video playback using the HTML5 standards. I believe once the iPad hits the market, we will see a rush for web developers to redesign websites in order to be iPad friendly.

This new version of the video does not yet work but appears to be based on HTML5. The css files reference HTML5 and have a number of “webkit” specific calls. Webkit is the browser engine used in the iPad’s mobile safari. While the videos don’t currently play, the “fullscreen mode” reportedly already works in the iPad simulator.

I don't think Adobe will be going anywhere soon. Sure many sites probably will (and should) switch over to the HTML5 standard when it comes to media content... but with FLEX growing leaps and bounds in the RIA world it is a shame that Apple will be leaving all these wonderful rich internet applications off of a very capable device. FLASH in the sense of animation, advertising and media delivery can easily be replaced (as we are starting to see on an almost day-to-day basis), but these FLEX based (FLASH rendered) RIAs will not be as easily replaced by HTML5 and will put many developers into a bind as to whether or not duplicate the functionality so it can be rendered in iDevices, or just leave the iDevice audience completely out of the equation. I can understand Apple's selfish reasons for doing this (from a business perspective it partially makes sense), but in the long run not allowing FLASH on the devices will leave some great content and RIAs off of the device. Of course with CS5 coming out... you can build many of these apps directly in FLASH and export them to an app store compatible format (with some tweaking I'm sure) but with Apple's stubbornness that will still force many developers to have to develop their applications multiple times for multiple devices which is a pain and unfortunate.

If Apple sells 10 million iPads in the next year, Flash will adapt or die.

If Apple sells only 150,000 iPads in the next 5 years, Flash will do fine.

That seems a bit excessive. If Apple sells 1 Million iPads in the next year (which is projected....could be more) then that is a large enough market share for things to change.

Look how many iPhone formatted sites there are...you don't think the same will ring true for iPad?

Funny thing is...Flash is the proprietary plugin format!! Anyone that has ever done a fresh install of windows should know its not in there till you add it! HTML5 is web standard....so apple is trying to adhere to proper standards and NOT go proprietary and every jumps all over them for not supporting a buggy bloated proprietary format!

If I would want any proprietary web programming plugin on the iPad it would be Silverlight...hands down!!
