Kindle iOS App Gets iPad-Heavy Update

AppleInsider reports that Amazon’s universal Kindle iOS app has been updated with lots of new features for the iPad in particular, such as a Newsstand feature with access to more than 400 magazines and newspapers that can also be downloaded to the Kindle Fire, including the likes of Martha Stewart Living, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, and Popular Science. AppleInsider says that both single issues and subscriptions are available. Another feature introduced to the iPad version by the update is access to print replica textbooks, which enables students to purchase or rent a wide variety of said textbooks. These special textbooks keep the same formatting as the print editions, but also have added notes, highlights, zooming, panning, linked Contents tables, and Whispersyncing of notes with other Kindles.

The iPhone and iPod touch hasn’t been entirely forgotten in the update, you’ll be pleased to know, which also brings with it integration of personal documents, such as Word Docs, to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which means that you can use your Send-to-Kindle email address to move your documents around your devices. PDFs are also now readable via the newly integrated PDF reader.

Friendly heads up: Before upgrading, you might want to read some of the post-update comments in the app store and reviews on tech blogs (and those comments).

The update might work well for some and not others. I'm going to hold off till the dust settles and maybe they work out bugs, because the unupdated app is working well enough that I don't want to run into unnecessary problems. YMMV.

Since I updated the Kindle app I can no longer download books. It will show what I already bought but there is no longer a way to order new books.

Sorry, but that's the way the Kindle app now works on the iPad. In fact, this change was made during Amazon's last update of the Kindle app, back in June. Back then, Apple began to implement their policy of requiring 30% of in-app purchases across the board. Amazon (and all the other ebook app developers) decided to turn off the ability to purchase a book within the app. Now, you have to go to Amazon via a web browser and buy a book and have it delivered to the Kindle app. After that, it will show up in your app's archive for retrieval/reading. An extra step, but not broken.

Hope this reassures that nothing is wrong with your Kindle app. It's working as designed.
