MacRumors reports today that Bungie has confirmed via an interview with iOS developer Daniel Blezek on Bungie.net that it is porting legendary Mac FPS Marathon to the iPad. Apparently the project has been in the works since mid 2010, and was due for release originally in fall 2010, but was held up by legal issues regarding the distribution of the original Marathon level packs.
In the interview, Blezek says that he was inspired to start developing an iPad port of the classic Mac game when he was playing the trilogy at the time that the iPad was announced and started thinking about the possibilities. Hereís Blezek telling Bungie what he finds so special about the game:
According to MacRumors, Marathon for iPad has already been submitted to the App Store, so its release should be imminent. And do you want some even better news than that? Itís going to be free to download too!ďMarathon's story and gameplay are outstanding; Durandal's descent into rampancy, his quirky humor and the hidden messages make excellent additions to the old school style. For many, Marathon will invoke a wave of nostalgia; for others, this will be the first experience with the seminal Mac FPS. I hope all players appreciate Bungie's commitment to their fans. It's not every company who would support bringing a 16 year old game back to life!Ē
