Conde Nast Set to Offer Digital Subscriptions on iPad, Starting With the New Yorker

The New York Post reports that Conde Nast is on the verge of selling digital subscriptions to its magazines on the iPad via in-app purchases. According to the Post’s sources, The New Yorker will be the first Conde Nast magazine to offer digital subscriptions, starting as soon as early next week. The Post adds that by the end of May, Conde’s seven other iPad publications that are currently only available as single issues will be available on subscription, namely: Wired, Golf Digest, Glamour, Vanity Fair, Self, Allure and GQ. Single-issue prices will be cut from their current price of $4.99 to $1.99 for the New Yorker and GQ, and from $3.99 to $1.99 for Glamour and Wired. Annual subscriptions will be priced at $19.99. It’s also likely that subscribers to the print editions of any of the magazines will have free access to the iPad versions.

The New York Post notes that this news means that Conde Nast will have its subscription system up and running before its major rival, Hearst, which recently said that it would be selling subscriptions to iPad versions of its magazines such as Esquire, O: the Oprah Magazine, and Popular Mechanics, starting from June with the issues cover-dated July.
