Apple Breezes Past HP to Become the Largest Computer Maker
Following on from Apple’s jaw-dropping and record-breaking financial results yesterday, AppleInsider reports today that the stellar sales figures mean that Apple has now sped past HP in terms of both computer unit sales and revenues for the first time ever, to claim the much-coveted position of top computer maker in the world. Yesterday it was reported that in the last quarter Apple sold 15.4 million iPads and 5.2 million Macs, which makes a combined total of more than 20 million personal computers sold. This puts it way out in front of HP, which was reported by Gartner to have sold 14.7 million computers in the fourth quarter, and Lenovo and Dell who sold 12.9 million and 11.6 million respectively.
AppleInsider notes that when Apple’s CEO Tim Cook was asked about the impact of lower-priced tablets such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire, on the iPad, he said that he was “really happy” with sales of the iPad, adding, “I think people really want to do multiple things with their tablets. We don’t really see these limited function tablets and e-readers being in the same category.”
