Over 5 Million iBooks Downloaded So Far Via iPad
Although the majority of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ keynote speech at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference on Monday was naturally taken up with unveiling the new iPhone 4, he took a few moments at the start of his speech to talk about the incredible success of iBooks, with users downloading over 5 million digital books in the 65 days since the launch of the iPad, giving it a market share of approximately 22 percent. Five of the six biggest publishers have digital books in the iBooks store, which now contains over 60, 000 iBooks.
At the same time as announcing these impressive sales figures, Jobs also announced that iBooks on iPad will be updated as part of iOS 4, with several new enhancements, such as the iBooks app now being able to sync your current place in a book, along with any bookmarks, highlights and notes you’ve created, between copies of the same book on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. iBooks users can also now read and store PDFs right in iBooks.
