My iPad3 glass shattered
I tripped and fell, my iPad3 glass shattered. It still workes though. What are my options? the Apple store will not repair it, just replace it for $299.,Were they telling me the truth? Why can't they repair it. Are there any authorized dealers to repair it?
Sorry to hear the news. Your options are limited. The replacement cost quoted by Apple is correct. As I understand it, your damaged unit will be replaced with a refurbished unit and yours will be sent in for repair and then become a refurbished unit.
If you're handy - there is a fix-it-yourself option. The replacement screen and digitizer retails for about $60 plus applicable taxes. Problem is it's a sensitive operation and there have been reports of screen replacement causing damage to the iPad's wifi system.
Hope this helps.

i think $299 is the best option considering the price of a new one but i wonder why the warranty not cover it :ipad-front:
You can check the ifixit.com site to see what they say, but iirc, they claim the iPad 3 is nearly impossible to fix yourself (This is from memory). Fixing it is probably not cost effective. They will probably give you a refurb for $300. Not a bad deal and their refurbs are supposedly like new (In November 2011 my iPad 2 stopped rotating and the replacement unit I got (under warranty) seemed brand new to me. I didn't think to bother to ask if was a refurb, but I thought it was better than the one I had at first).
Remember that Apple has this plan called Apple Care +. You pay $100 and you get accident coverage for two years, and two "incidents". For each incident you pay $50. Not something you can use now, but something to keep in mind for the future. It is really easy to have a spill with these things so this is why I bought this extended warranty, even though I am NOT normally someone who buys warranties on electronic gadgets (I have too many, I'd go broke just on warranties! if I did).
Best to you on your decision.
if its in warranty period its better to get it replaced without any second thought of repairing it

My iPad3 glass shattered
To be clear just in case some members misunderstand, smashing the glass on your iDevice is not covered by the standard Apple warranty. That is accidental damage. You need specialist additional cover for that, such as AppleCare+ or specific cover under your household insurance...
If you happen to chance across a Genius having a particularly good day they may replace your device without charge, but that is entirely discretionary and pretty rare (although I can testify to it happening!)
Hope you get it fixed, one way or another ;)
i dont mean to sound offish here but people buy apple products which aren't cheap in this day and age i own a few myself and i cannot understand why people don't have a screen protectors on iPad or iPhone so save the glass from smashing small price to pay for new device or to get it repaired. i have a screen protector on my both my iPad & iPhone and i admit i have dropped them both a couple of times of tiled floors and if it wasn't for the the screen protector i would of had to buy another device with out a doubt
and to be honost i don't think i could afford to buy another device just out right. As soon as i get a new apple product and it has a screener protector on before i even switch the device on and a good strong case too. I am sorry to hear that device has broken but please take my advice and put a screen protector on it and if it does happen again then it could save a dent in your wallet like it has done to me a a couple of times its really a small price to pay. Here is a good screen protector i know its expensive but its worth the expense for your device - Apple iPad 3 (3rd Gen) Screen Protector | invisibleSHIELD by ZAGG Reviewhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eZdvwqbGwY.
I hope you get it fixed soon
Take my advice and get a skin protector on it to save the damage
Save the dent in your wallet too!!!
Happy iPadding some where !!!
A screen protector is designed to keep the screen from getting scratched, say if a bit of sand gets on it and you press that up against the screen. I seriously doubt it will stop the screen from getting cracked. If you drop an iPad and it lands hard on a corner or the screen hits a hard object in just the right way, the screen will crack if there is a screen protector or not.
Falling and cracking (or not) seems the luck of the draw. I've dropped my iPads and iPhone multiple times and they've survived, without any kind of screen protector. In one case, my iPhone screen shattered, and I happened to luck out and Apple replaced my phone for free.
