Syncing iBooks Documents

Can or do items in the iBooks apps sync across iDevices such as Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, and Notes do? I have saved several .pdf documents in my iPad 3's iBooks app and want them in my iPhone 4S's iBooks app as well but I don't know how to sync them over without going thru the PITA iTunes. I have the Documents and Data option switched on in the iCloud menu on both the iPad and iPhone but the .pdf's are not syncing.

I had actually done all that twerppoet had done except open the books on the device that had them on it. That must be the trick. I finally just emailed them to myself and saved them on the device that didn't have them. PITA. :/
